Question:
Hi Charlie, are there any codes requiring or recommending residential electrical wiring upgrades when knob and tube wiring is discovered in an older home? I am in Indiana, and we have no local ordinances addressing this issue. I am currently working on repairing home due to water damage. Insurance will cover the upgrade if it is required or recommended. All the best, Daniel Watson

Answer:
Hi Daniel, in general the NEC® provides the requirements for new installations, unless the Code Section specifically states the rule applies to replacements or maintenance. Section 90.4 establishes guidelines on the enforcement which includes use by insurance inspectors. Additionally, a report from a licensed electrical contractor indicating the wiring is compromised may be aid the insurance company in their decision making. Also see Article 394 for guidance on Knob and Tube wiring.
