Question:
Greetings Code and Safety Fans,
My question is what is a "Ufer" Ground? Several people have mentioned it to me, yet when I look in the NEC, it does not show up. What NEC rule addresses a Ufer?
Bill Katancik
A
Answer:
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the question. The word "Ufer" does not appear in the NEC, that we are aware of. Ufer is the last name of Herbert G. Ufer with Underwriters Laboratories, an engineer and member of IEEE, who was responsible for work that resulted in concrete-encased grounding electrode rules in the NEC. His work is detailed in IEEE paper number 63-105. Details about what constitutes a concrete-encased electrode are found in Section 250.52(A)(3) of the NEC.
