Question:
Hello CQD, what is the reasoning for having a staple for NM Cable, within 12 inches of where it leaves a box? Also, why is a staple required every 12 inches after that? Isn’t a staple every 12 inches too much for NM Cable? Thanks in advance, Carl Jaeger.
A
Answer:
Hello Carl, thanks for the questions. Securing NM Cable every 12 inches does seem like too much. In general, Section 334.30 requires NM Cable to secured/supported within 12 inches of a box, and every 4 ½ feet after that. It is also worth reviewing the exception to Section 314.17(B)(2) for NM Cable securing requirements when the nonmetallic box does not contain integral cable clamps.
