I have a problem with your "answer". Nick asked a specific question and you replied by quoting the NEC, which is what confused Nick. I think we would all like you to answer the actual question, does a furnace in a closet or a dishwasher require AFCI? Thankfully I'm in Michigan that eliminated all GFCI requirements.

Answer:
Hey Dave thanks for your comment and we are sorry you have a problem with the response but the question was answered in the last sentence. A furnace or dishwasher do not specifically require AFCI protection, as appliances, but the outlet (point on a wiring system at which power is taken to supply utilization equipment) supplying them does- if it meets the parameters and is located in a closet in a dwelling unit as stated in 210.12(A). Therefore the branch circuit wiring and the appliances are protected by AFCI's.
