Question:
Hello CQD, thank you for the valuable service that you provide for our industry. Regarding your answer on October 14, 2023, concerning the use of Rigid non-metallic raceway to protect type NM Cable:
Good morning, Dan, it would be permissible to protect the NM Cable installed thru framing members using rigid nonmetallic conduit. Section 334.15 and 334.17 both point back to Section 300.4. Section 300.4(A)(1)-(2) and (C) have exceptions permitting the use of rigid nonmetallic conduit for protection in lieu of a 1/16th in. steel plate.
Since the conduit is providing physical protection, would the code require that it be schedule 80 PVC?
Regards, Donald H.
A
Answer:
Hello Donald, thanks for keeping us honest, the devil is in the details. Article 352 covers Rigid Nonmetallic Conduit (PVC). Section 352.12(C) and 352.10(K) restricts the use of RNC (PVC) that is subject to physical damage to Schedule 80. By relation, the RNC (PVC) cited in
Exception No. 1 to Section 300.4 would indeed need to be Schedule 80.
