Question:
Hello Friends,
In my home we have a door to the garage that swings open right in front of the electric box. Is this a Code violation?
Tammy Bernard
A
Answer:
Hi Tammy, no not generally. The door in the home is not permanently within the minimum required clear working space provided in the NEC. It can be swung out of the working space. The NEC is silent on the issue. There are often shallow closets built specifically for panelboards with doors that when in the closed position cover the panelboard, when in the open position allow access to the panelboard and are out of the required working space. When someone is working within the equipment it is advisable to secure the door(s) from swinging into the required clear working space.
