Question:
Hello Code Question of the Day.
We are installing a natural gas, tankless, water heater in a utility closet, located on the patio of an apartment complex. Does the receptacle powering the water heater need to be GFCI protected? The same circuit is also powering the light and a 5kW wall heater.

Answer:
Hello Jason,
Based on the information in the question, the receptacle is not outdoor (it is in a closet) so GFCI protection would not be required. You might want to check the loads on that circuit to be sure an individual branch circuit is not required since there is already a 5kW heater connected to it.
