Question:
Dear CQD, thank you for your service I read your forum daily and often share with fellow Electricians on the job site. My question today is in reference to parking lot lighting. Is the code currently reviewing putting a fuse into each parking lot pole to protect the fixtures on it, instead of relying on the breaker that may feed all the pole lights? When a fixture goes to ground and trips the breaker it often leaves the parking lot in the dark creating a safety hazard. With a fuse holder in each base, only the affected light would be off.
Thanks,
Gary Weber

Answer:
Hi Gary, thank you for the kind words, and great to hear that you share the CQD with your coworkers. Section 240.21 of the NEC® requires that overcurrent protection shall be provided for each ungrounded circuit conductor and the protection shall be located at the point where the circuit conductors receive their supply, except as specified in 240.21 (A)-(H), none of which apply to the NEC parking lot luminaires. Electrical installations can always exceed the minimum criteria established by the NEC™️
