Question:
Hi CQD. We are wiring an air handling unit, installed above a drop ceiling of a commercial space. The power supply is a 20A, 208V 3-phase branch circuit. Does the air-handling unit require a disconnect, or is the breaker for the in the panelboard sufficient as a disconnect? Mark Thompson
A
Answer:
Hello Mark, thank you for participating. An air-handling unit like the one you describe in your question would be considered a permanently connected electric appliance with a motor load. Based on the branch circuit rating the air-handling unit likely has a motor larger than 1/8 H.P. The disconnect will need to comply with Sections 422.31(C), 430.109 and 430.110.
