Question:
Hello Code Question of the Day. I have installed an 8 circuit sub-panel in a hallway of a dwelling to supply power to the 2
nd floor bedrooms. The sub-panel is fed with a 10/3 NM Cable, protected by a 30A 2-pole breaker. The project failed inspection and the AHJ cited Section 225.39 stating the sub-panel needed to be supplied by at least by #8 AWG conductors. Is the current installation with the 30A supply code compliant? Thanks, Earl Fisch

Answer:
Hello Earl, thank you for your question. The feeder you have described appears to be installed indoors. The scope of Article 225 covers the installation of outdoor branch circuits and feeders run on or between buildings, structures etc. Article 215 covers indoor feeders. Specifically, Section 215.2 on the minimum size and rating, and Section 215.3 on the sizing of the overcurrent protection devices.
