Question:
Hello CQD. We are working on a project where the specifications call for all of the 277/480V system wiring be color-coded as: brown, orange & yellow for the ungrounded conductors, and white for the neutralconductor. I was always under the assumption that the neutral conductor for a 277/480V system needed to be gray. Does the Code permit a white neutral conductor for a 277/480V system? Thanks, Jacob Charles

Answer:
Jacob, thank you for your question. The
NEC® does not mandate a specific color to be used for ungrounded condcutors. Section 200.6 does require certain colors for the identification of grounded (neutral) conductors. In general, either gray or white would be permitted for a grounded (neutral) conductor(s). Also see Section 210.5(C)(1) for additional information on the identification of ungrounded conductors.
