Question:
Hello Charlie, I want to mount a mesh wifi unit on my ceiling which would require adding an outlet to the ceiling as well. Above this ceiling is an unfinished attic crawl space. If I added an outlet here, the outlet box would be secured to a joist and covered only by some roll and blown-in fiberglass insulation. Would I need to cover the area above the outlet box with anything to protect it? Or would it be OK for the box to sit under insulation and nothing else? All the best, Jessica Weitzel
A
Answer:
Hello Jessica, thank you for participating in the CQD. The installation you described would be permitted as the attic is not a designed storage area or walk-in type attic. The box will need to be supported in accordance with Section 314.23, also see Section 334.23 and 320.23 for additional requirements for cable installations in attic spaces.
