Question:
Hello CQD, when replacing an old service-entrance cable and meter socket, on a one-family dwelling unit, would an emergency disconnecting means be required? Regards, Russ Pike
A
Answer:
Hi Russ, in general the
NEC® provides requirements for new installations. The application of the
NEC® to repairs or replacements of existing installations will be at the discretion of the AHJ in your jurisdiction. If the service is being upgraded, to a larger size or to modern equipment, then it is likely that the new requirements would be applicable, and the emergency disconnect required in Section 230.85 would need to be installed. It is always advisable to check with the AHJ when making repairs or replacing existing installations to see if there are established local requirements in addition to those found in the
NEC®.
