Is it ever okay to use a 15amp switch with a 20 amp circuit breaker.

Answer:
Hey Donna thanks for your question. Switches must be used within their ratings as stated in 404.14. If snap switches or control devices are used for cord and plug connected equipment, on general purpose branch circuits, they must have a rating not less than the maximum overcurrent device as stated in 404.14(F) and as provided in 210.21(B). So yes in some cases 15 ampere snap switches can be protected by 20 ampere overcurrent devices but they must be suitable for the load.
