Question:
Hello CQD, which branch circuits are required to have Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter type circuit breakers in a dwelling unit? Thanks, Eric Williams
A
Answer:
Eric,
Thanks for the question. Section 210.11(A) of the 2017 NEC provides the requirements for Arc Fault Circuit Interupters (AFCIs) in dwelling units. This Code Section requires AFCI protection on all 120 Volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets or devices (as defined in Article 100) installed in dwelling unit Kitchens, Family Rooms, Closets, Hallways, Laundry Areas, or similar areas. The method for providing AFCI protection is not limited to just circuit breakers. Section 210.11(A) (1)-(6) lists the various methods permitted for providing the required AFCI protection. As always, it is important to consult with your local AHJ, as they may have local rules that define "similar areas".
