Question:

Do I need to install a 50 amp GFCI breaker for an oven if it's less than 6 feet from the sink?

Paul Green
A

Answer:

Hey Paul thanks for your question. If not connected using an attachment plug and receptacle then no.

If not in a Dwelling Unit, as that term is defined in Article 100, and a receptacle is installed, then yes as stated in 210.8(B)(2) and 210.8(B)(5). Single-phase receptacles rated 50 amperes or less supplied by branch circuits rated 150 volts to ground or less must have GFCI protection as stated in 210.8(B) - for other than dwelling units.

If in a dwelling unit 210.8(A) only requires 125 volt 15 and 20 ampere single phase receptacles to have GFCI protection. For the 2020 NEC the voltage rating increases to 250 so when that edition takes effect in your area it will be yes for dwelling units also - if a receptacle is installed.
