Question:
Hello,
I have to run a 20-amp power line to a workshop installed at the back of our property. This will be underground across the lawn. If I install it in PVC conduit, what is the minimum depth required? Does the minimum depth change if it is steel conduit? The run is about 100 feet in length.
Thanks for any Code help you can provide.

Answer:
Hi Peter,
Thanks for the question. The NEC addresses minimum burial depths for electrical circuits in Section 300.5 and Table 300.5 with notes. Based on the information in your question, the minimum depth for a branch circuit installed in PVC conduit would be 18 inches. If the circuit were installed in rigid metal conduit or intermediate metal conduit, the minimum depth is 6 inches from grade to the top of the conduit. As an aside, this installation may require a permit and inspection by the local authority having jurisdiction. You might want to check with them. Hope this is helpful.
