Question:
Hello and thanks for this Code service. I have an inspector that is requiring my new home generator and transfer equipment to transfer to generator power within 10 seconds. Is this an electrical Code requirement?

A
Answer:
Hi Peter,
Thanks for participating. A generator installed in a home is usually an optional standby system rather than an emergency system or legally required standby system. There is no time limit for transferring to the alternate source of power on an optional standby system. Optional standby systems are covered in Article 702 of the NEC. The 10 second requirement for transfer of the load is a rule for emergency systems as covered in Section 700.12.
