Question:
Hello and Thanks for this NEC Forum,
Read this stuff every day. Is there a color code requirement for branch circuits in the NEC? Some say it is a requirement, but I'm not able to find the text. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:
Hi Frank,
Thanks for the question. The NEC does not provide a specific color code requirement. The requirements for branch circuit identification are found in Section 210.5(C)(1) which includes a few methods that can be used for conductor identification (including color) when the NEC requires they be identified. Additionally, Section 215.12(C) provides similar identification requirements for feeders, and color-coding is one method that could be used where identification is necessary by a Code requirement. As an aside, project specifications may also include a specific color code, and often approved plans and specifications typically meet and sometimes exceed the NEC minimums.
