Question:
Good Afternoon,
I was told by an inspector that a junction/pull box has to be installed with a minimum working space in front of it to comply with Section 110.26(A). Our office is of the opinion that this is an incorrect ruling. I was hoping your opinion could help with this situation.

Answer:
Hello BC,
The requirements for minimum working space in front of electrical equipment are provided in Section 110.26(A) which indicates that "working space for equipment operating at 1000 volts, nominal, or less to ground and likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized shall comply with the dimensions of 110.26(A)(1), (A)(2), (A)(3), and (A)(4) or as required or permitted elsewhere in this Code." Junction and pull boxes typically do not fall into this requirement. Junction and pull boxes are required to be accessible (as applied to wiring methods) as indicated in Section 314.29. Also, remember that the AHJ (inspector) has the responsibility for interpretations and approvals of the installation as indicated in Section 90.4.
