Question:
Hello and thank you for this forum. In a temporary wiring situation, I want to feed several pieces of equipment from a single circuit cord for a temporary bar. One individual believes the cord should have a GFCI outlet at each piece of equipment. I believe the entire cord should be fed from one GFCI receptacle. My thinking is that if you are only offering protection at the equipment, the cord itself is not protected with GFCI protection in a public area. Which is correct?

Answer:
Mr. Sparky, Thanks for the question. Your thinking is correct. The GFCI protection is required for the receptacles at the temporary bar installation, that's a given. If an extension cord is used from a receptacle to provide power to the temporary bar equipment assembly, then it is only an extension cord, not a branch circuit. The receptacle must be GFCI protected. Sections 590.4(C) and 590.4(D), and 590.6(A) were referenced to address this question based on the information provided. Hope this is helpful.
