Question:
Good Day,
Where does it say that when drywall is removed, and electrical work is exposed, that electrical work needs to be brought up to code? Kitchen dedicated circuits , etc.
Leo McNamara
A
Answer:
Hi Leo,
Thanks for the question. The NEC is generally not retroactive. Meaning that new requirements in the latest edition typically do not have to be enforced for existing installations that were installed in accordance with the adopted edition of the NEC in a jurisdiction during an earlier point in time. It is also a good plan to verify with the local authority having jurisdiction to be sure about any local electrical code rules or local administrative rules that may require existing installation to be brought current if exposed during remodels or retrofit work.
