Question:
Greetings.
We just received a red tag for a project for installing the night lights (with emergency battery units) all on a single circuit breaker in the panel. The inspector did not cite the Code rule but said the emergency lighting units have to be on the branch circuit feeding each area. Can you provide clarification?
Thank you.

Answer:
Those darn inspectors. Inspectors always seem to get a bad rap for doing a good job. Marty, the inspector has brought up an important requirement contained in Section 700.12(I)(2)(3) which indicates that unit equipment has to be connected to the same branch circuit supply the normal lighting in that area and connected ahead of any local switches.
