Question:
Hello,
We just purchased a home and the receptacle for the refrigerator is on a 20-ampere separate circuit. Does it require GFCI protection in accordance with the NEC? This outlet and branch circuit only supplies the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Thanks for your time.

Answer:
Hi Paula,
Based on the information in the question, the GFCI protection is not required. See Section 210.8(A)(6) which indicates that receptacles installed to serve countertop surfaces require GFCI protection.
