Good Afternoon,

We appreciate the daily dose of Code. It keeps us healthy. Here's a question that many can relate to. Why is the same year of the NEC not adopted each state or adopting agency? It is challenging to say the least working in many jurisdictions that are all on a different edition of the Code.

Bill,

Thanks for participating. All we can say is, we feel your pain. Each jurisdiction has established adoption processes that are all on different schedules and agendas. There are several reasons too numerous to enumerate. It is important to learn which edition of the NEC is being enforced in each were working in those jurisdictions. Then there are local electrical rules or amendments...wow. Lots to keep up with. If it is in question, contact the local building department for the correct information.

CHARLIE TROUT: Charles M. Trout, better known as Charlie, was a nationally known NEC® expert and author. He served on several NEC® technical committees and is past chairman of CMP-12. In 2006 Charlie was awarded the prestigious Coggeshall Award for outstanding contributions to the electrical contracting industry, codes and standards development, and technical training. Even though Charlie passed away in October of 2015, his work continues in spirit. NECA continues to maintain this question forum for its many subscribers in memory and recognition of all his significant contributions to making the NEC what it is today.
