Question:
Hello Code Experts,
I have a fairly large sailboat in a slip on a nearby lake. My question is does the electrical Code cover wiring inside the boat? Many people here are doing electrical work in their boats and I'm curious if there is a regulation?
Thanks for any guidance you may provide.

Answer:
Hi Jason,
Thanks for the question. You know what they say about experts…another story. LOL Section 90.2(B)(1) indicates that the NEC does not cover Installations in ships, watercraft other than floating buildings, railway rolling stock, aircraft, or automotive vehicles other than mobile homes and recreational vehicles. The NEC does cover the shore power at marinas and boatyards. Requirements are provided in Article 555. We suggest communicating the concerns to the owner/operator of the marina or location where the boat is kept.
