Question:
Thank you for the service you provide. I recently was part of a discussion with various Code enthusiasts from around the country, and we had differing opinions about 300.4(D). If there is a nominal 2x4 wood framing member and a standard nonmetallic single gang box is installed ( 2 1/4” x 4” by 3 ½” deep), is it permissible to install a nonmetallic sheathed cable which is running down the center of the 2x4 framing member and installed it into the box through the hole closest to the wood framing member, or is it required to install the cable into the outer hole, furthest from the framing member? Thank you for your response,
Derrick Atkins

Answer:
Hey Derrick thanks for your question and the kind words. It seems you are asking if the NM cable can be closer than 1 1/4 inch from the nearest edge of a framing member. Yes, but if so it must be protected by a steel plate, sleeve or equivalent means as stated in 300.4(D). If this is not the intent of your question please resend it in.
