Question:
Hello and thanks for this service.
Can nonmetallic-sheathed cable be installed in underground PVC from a wall to a kitchen island for the receptacles installed on the island? An inspector has said that NM cable cannot be used. Please provide an opinion.
Thank you.
R. Chesney
A
Answer:
Hello R. Chesney,
Nonmetallic sheathed cable is suitable for dry locations only in accordance with Section 334.10(A)(1). Underground PVC to the island is considered a wet location as indicated in Section 300.5(B). The wiring method chosen to route the branch circuit underground to the kitchen island should be suitable for wet locations. UF cable is often used to accomplish this.
Hope this is useful.
