Question:
Hello CQD,
I recently cam across a residential panelboard in a townhome and the circuits were marked very generally, so much so that it was pretty difficult to identify what breakers controlled which circuits. Does the electrical Code address circuit identification/marking?

Answer:
Hello Bill,
Thanks for the question. The NEC has evolved over the years to require more specifics regarding identification of circuits. Section 408.4(A) addresses panelboard circuit directories and reads (in part) as follows: Every circuit and circuit modification shall be legibly identified as to its clear, evident, and specific purpose or use. The identification shall include an approved degree of detail that allows each circuit to be distinguished from all others. Spare positions that contain unused overcurrent devices or switches shall be described accordingly. That information provided clearly indicates that enough detail has to be provided to help occupants identify and distinguish between the contained circuits. Hope this is useful.
