Question:
Hello,
I was eating at a restaurant last recently and noticed, their holiday lights were still up and energized. The cord connection to the plug was damaged and looks unsafe. We told the owner about it, but they didn't seem to think it was a problem. Is there a time limit for such installations covered in any regulation?
Thanks,
Susan Gelder
A
Answer:
Hi Susan,
Thanks for sending this in. You were wise to notify the owner of a potentially unsafe situation. The smart response would be to remove the condition and disconnect the holiday lighting. The NEC does place a time limitation on the use of holiday lighting. See NEC Section 590.3(B) limits the time of use to 90 days. You could also contact the local authority having jurisdiction and notify them of the situation, which might help.
