Question:
Outside at weather heads I typically see what is called an H-tap type of splice, where conductor transition from overhead outside wiring to a raceway or other chapter 3 wiring methods. I've been looking for a code rule that allows this type of splice without using a junction box, can you help me out Charlie? Thanks in advance for what you do each day.

Answer:
Hey Chloe thanks for your question. Typically, the overhead conductors supplying buildings are messenger-supported wiring such as triplex or quadruplex as defined in 396.2. Conductor splices and taps are allowed if made by approved methods as stated in 396.56.
If the overhead conductors are service drop conductors as the term Service Drop is defined in Article 100 they are owned by the utility and the NEC does not apply as stated in 90.2(B)(5).
