Question:
Greetings Code Gurus,
I have a wire that does not fit into the lug in a panelboard I installed. The wire is large because of the distance of the feeder run. Can I trim the first layer of strands from the wire so it will fit into the lug? What are my options?
Tom Clifford
A
Answer:
Hi Tom,
No, don’t trim strands away from the conductor. This would violate 110.12 and be very unworkmanlike. There are multiple (Code compliant) methods that can be used to adapt to the proper size at the point of termination. See NEC Sections 110.12, 110.14, and 110.3(B). The equipment manufacturer and conductor manufacturer may both have appropriate solutions that could be used.
