Question:
NEC 300.4D If a wall consists of 2x3 framing members, and one wishes to install a cable with a 5/8" diameter, would this code section require some kind of plate be ran from floor to ceiling on both sides of the 2x3 to protect the cable? Never seen this done.

Hey Joe thanks for your question. Yes. Section 300.4(D) applies to cables and raceways installed parallel to framing members where penetration by nails or screws is likely. If the 1 1/4 inch dimension cannot be maintained, which would be the case in your example a 1/18 inch steel plate must be provided on both edges of the framing member unless the exceptions apply.
