Question:
Good Afternoon,
Does a subpanel without main breaker have a designated up and down? I was informed that my panel was mounted upside down but I didn't see in NEC 240.81 that states it has to be a certain way.

Answer:
Hi Eric,
Some enclosed panelboards can be installed with either end in the vertical up position. Panelboard manufacturer's installation instructions clarify this. Section 240.81 addresses circuit breaker installation and requires orientation relative to the on (closed) or off (open position of the breaker installed in the panelboard. Breakers installed in the vertical position must have the up positions as the on position. Breakers can be installed horizontally in a panelboard and the on and off position are clearly marked on the breaker.
Hope this is helpful.
