Question:
Does all electrical equipment have to be UL approved?
Mark Goldberg
A
Answer:
Hey Mark, thanks for the question, a fairly common one.
According to the NEC Section 110.2, conductors and equipment covered by the Code are acceptable only if approved by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). The authority having jurisdiction often bases approvals on the use of listed (certified) equipment. The NEC does not require all conductors and equipment to be UL approved. Section 90.7 addresses product certification from any qualified electrical testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Note that there are some specific listing (product certification) requirements for equipment that are included throughout the NEC. Where this occurs, a mandatory listing (product certification) requirement is triggered.
