Question:
Hello,
In SC, are an electrical outlet and light fixtures required in a crawl space of a new construction? I had a service company tell me that was the case during a recent quote given for some electrical upgrades for our new home.

A
Answer:
Hi Stephen,
If the crawl space has equipment that requires servicing, a receptacle outlet and a switch-controlled lighting outlet are required. These are also required to be protected by GFCI protective devices. See Sections 210.8(A), 210.63, and 210.70(C). If there is no equipment in the crawl space that requires servicing, then installing the receptacles and lighting outlet is optional. These are National Electrical Code requirements, but there may be local SC Electrical Code requirements in your area. Check with the local inspectors for this information.
