Question:
Dear Code Question of the Day.
Is a bushing required for a run of EMT containing 4/0 XHHW copper feeder wires to a control panel? The 2.5 inch EMT connectors have plastic insulated throats, but the inspector is requiring plastic insulating bushings. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the question. The inspector has the interpretation and approving responsibility as indicated in Section 90.4. The NEC contains minimum requirements, meaning one must do at least that much. Section 300.4(G) provides several acceptable methods of providing protection for insulated conductors in sizes 4 AWG and larger. This section does recognize fittings with smooth rounded insulated surfaces as a means of providing such protection.
