Question:
Hello NEC Friends,
Can the disconnect for a ground mounted A/C unit in the back of a home be out of sight from the unit? Is there an exception?
Thanks,
Gregg Dorne
A
Answer:
Hi Gregg,
Section 440.14 generally requires that the disconnecting means for an air-conditioning unit located on the outside of a residence must be located within sight from and readily accessible from the A/C equipment. There is an exception that permits the disconnect to be out of sight from the unit but that only applies to an industrial application with written procedures and where conditions of maintenance and supervision ensure that qualified persons service the installation. See 440.14 Exception No. 1. Exception No. 2 does not apply to this installation.
