Question:
A double pole switch for a stand by gen must be service rated if it is on the line proceeding the man disconnect. It really should have a main disconnect before it?
Dan Dirks
A
Answer:
Hey Dan thanks for your question. Yes, if a transfer switch is used as service equipment it must be listed or field labeled and marked to identify it as being suitable as service equipment as stated in 230.66. If a "main disconnect" is installed "upstream" of the transfer switch the main disconnect is the service equipment and the transfer switch does not have to meet those conditions. But the transfer equipment must be suitable for the use such as for optional standby systems as stated in 702.5.
