Question:
Good Morning Code Question of the Day.
Can a grounding conductor be without green insulation? We have a dryer receptacle that had to be replaced and there were four wires. A red, black, white, and a bare silver wire. I thought that grounding conductors had to be green to meet the Code. You opinion is valuable.

A
Answer:
Hello Peter,
The cable described in your question sounds like SE Cable, Style R. This cable typically includes insulated ungrounded and grounded conductors and a bare equipment grounding conductor. Section 250.119 addresses bare conductors that can be used as equipment grounding conductors. Section 338.10(B)(2) addresses use of the bare conductor of these types of cables as an equipment grounding conductor.
