Question:
I'm not an electrician but I have a hardwired smoke alarm in my basement of my 3-story home. The inspector stated that the alarm is supposed to alert the entire home from the basement. What could be wrong, is it possibly the wiring?

Answer:
Thanks for the question. The NEC requires the electrical installation to comply with minimum safety requirements and installation rules for smoke alarms. The requirements to interconnect them so that if one goes off, they all do, is provided in the International Residential Code (IRC) and the Fire Alarm Code. It is best to consult the local building department and authority having jurisdiction to an exact ruling on your installation and what will be required.
