Question:
Hello,
Thank you for this great forum I read the COD every day. How should inspectors treat a residential not attached garage or shed that has converted into office space (finished floors, walls and ceiling). Does the wiring need AFCI protection and do the receptacles need GFCI protection.
Thanks
Mike Clark

Answer:
Hello Mike,
Thanks for the question. The AFCI requirements in Section 210.12 apply to rooms or areas in dwelling units. If the structure referred to in the question does not qualify as a dwelling unit, by definition, then the AFCI requirements should not apply. The requirements for GFCI protection in Section 210.8(A)(2) appear to apply to the accessory building mentioned in the question.
