Question:
In a structure, separate services are not permitted to serve multiple units. The subject has come up again and I need to back it up with the proper code. My great mentor recently passed or I would have asked him. What code would property state this? 230.3 or 230.6 would be my answer but would like your opinion...please

A
Answer:
Hey Scott thanks for your question. Actually, separate services are allowed. A building or structure is only allowed to have one service - unless the conditions of 230.2 (A) through (D) are met as stated in 230.2. The exception to 230.40 allows multiple sets of service entrance conductors under the conditions stated. A plaque or directory is required as stated in 230.2(E). See the definitions of Service, Service Conductors and the two for Service Entrance Conductors, for more information.
