Question:
Greetings,
If Walker Duct (underfloor metal raceway) is abandoned in place and no longer used, do all the contained conductors have to be pulled out? An inspector on a grocery store remodel is requiring this. What say you?
Billy King
A
Answer:
Hi Billy,
The NEC does address removal of equipment, such as abandoned cables and conductors as indicated in Section 90.2(A). However, your specific situation is addressed in Section 390.57 which is titled "Discontinued Outlets." It reads as follows: When an outlet is abandoned, discontinued, or removed, the sections of circuit conductors supplying the outlet shall be removed from the raceway. No splices or reinsulated conductors, such as would be the case with abandoned outlets on loop wiring, shall be allowed in raceways. Hope this is helpful.
