Question:
Good Morning Friends,
We have a situation on a project that involves a request for a variance from the exact letter of the Code. Does the NEC address such permissions? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Answer:
Hello Nate and thanks for the question. This situation is typically addressed by the local authority having jurisdiction Administrative rules. You might want to check with them about applying for any variance. The NEC addresses this somewhat in Section 90.4 which allows the AHJ to grant "Special Permission." Note that the term "Special Permission" is defined in Article 100 as the written consent of the authority having jurisdiction.
