Question:
Is back of the kitchen island or peninsula considered a wall space thus requiring an outlet in addition to the outlet(s) installed on the sides?
Stefan Hamran
A
Answer:
Hey Stefan thanks for your question. An Island countertop doesn't have wall space but a peninsula does so a receptacle outlet is required for it as stated in 210.52(C)(1), (2) and (3). In general countertop receptacle outlets must be located above and within 20 inches of the top of the countertop as stated in 210.52(C)(5). Receptacle outlets are not specifically required on the sides of the cabinets or other countertop support but could be located there (instead of above the countertop) if the conditions in 210.52(C)(5) Exception 5 are met.
