Question:
Are paddle-type ceiling destratification fans required to be shut off during a fire situation, similar to other HVAC equipment like air-handlers and exhaust fans?
Karl Diez
A
Answer:
Hey Karl thanks for your question. No, not for Ceiling-Suspended (Paddle) Fans, at least not that we are aware of. There are some control provisions for ventilation systems in 21.7 of NFPA 72 - 2016, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code and in Chapter 6 of NFPA 90A, Standard for the Installation of Air conditioning and Ventilation Equipment. In some cases, HVAC systems are actuated for smoke control purposes. But all those requirements are for ventilation systems, not paddle fans. Check with the Fire Marshall and Building Official to make sure there are no local requirements.
