Question:
Hi, does a receptacle mounted at 60” AFF, behind a flat screen TV, but still within 72” of the edge of a sink, need to be GFI?
I see an exception for refrigerators in kitchens, does a similar exception exist for the situation above?
Thanks, Jeff Dow
A
Answer:
Hey Jeff thanks for your question. If I am visualizing your example accurately then yes receptacles (with the ratings specified) must have GFCI protection if they are within 6 ft of the top inside edge of a sink bowl as stated in 210. 8(A)(7) and 210.8(B)(5). Wording has been added to the second paragraph of 210.8 that provides a method of determining the distance. There is no specific exception for refrigerators in 210.8.
