Question:
Re: CQD answer published Monday, May 15, 2017 -Accessible Fitting
Good morning,
How does a listed transition fitting differ from an ordinary coupling? It is not necessary to maintain access to couplings or connectors so why is it necessary for the transition fitting? The "fitting" referenced in 300.15(F) is something to be used "in lieu of box or conduit body". The transition fitting is neither.

Answer:
Hey J Grant thanks for your comment. Because this fitting is used to "connect or transition" one wiring method to a different wiring method, instead of a box or conduit body, a coupling usually connects raceways lengths together. The rule was added to the 1987 NEC as Exception 9 to 300-15(B) based on accepting Proposal 3-88 as recorded in the 1986 TCR. The submitter called it a changeover fitting in the substantiation and described stripping the jacked from a cable assembly. The requirement for the fitting to be accessible after installation was part of the proposed wording. If you believe there is a reason, it does not need to be accessible or change the wording about the type of fitting, now is the time to submit a Public Input by September 7.
