Question:
Good Morning CQD.
Can I install a GFCI receptacle in an outlet that previously contained a non-grounding type receptacle? Do I have to run a new branch circuit with an equipment ground?
Paul Massa
A
Answer:
Hi Paul,
The NEC does have an allowance for this type of receptacle replacement. Section 406.4(D)(2)(b) indicates that a non–grounding-type receptacle(s) shall be permitted to be replaced with a ground-fault circuit interrupter type of receptacle(s). These receptacles must be marked “No Equipment Ground.” An equipment grounding conductor shall not be connected from the ground-fault circuit interrupter-type receptacle to any outlet supplied from the ground-fault circuit-interrupter receptacle. It is also important to note that some equipment or appliance manufacturers require that the branch circuit include an equipment grounding conductor.
